Double check any quote you receive. Got a quote for $200 for a speed sensor replacement. Ended up doing it in auto zone parking lot for $20 and 7 minutes of my time. They also tried quoting me over $1000 dollars for a repair. The part was $70 and repair took all of 20 minutes. $200 for differential fluid service. Again $30 in fluid and 15 minutes it’s fixed. All in all they wanted $1400 for $120 worth of parts and an hours worth of time. Sad….

I was traveling for work and found Smith Automotive to take a look at my car. They did a great job investigating the issue and walking me through the repair. They made a bunch of exceptions and worked me into their busy schedule to get me back on the road home on my schedule. They have top notch customer service and operate a very clean reputable shop. Been going here to get oil changes for a while and service has been good, our other car needed to get a tire looked at for a possible leak and it had to be patched up. 3 other tires needed new TPMS sensors and was quoted 386 dollars, decided to just get it done since car was already in the shop but found out after that Costco would’ve only been 180 for the 3 sensors. I know you probably shouldn’t compare a family business vs. Costco pricing but a 200 dollar price difference is steep. Had my friend who’s a mechanic from out of town look over their estimates for our other maintenance services due and he said they are over charging. Lesson learned to get more quotes.

After this experience we are DONE with smith automotive PHill, Ia. A job [starter replacement] (that even at a Dodge dealership is UnDeR $560 incld. Diag fees & Towing) cost a TOTAL of 1,074.82 at smith automotive. I asked why such a HUGE price difference for eXaCt service, answer was 'We Gotta Keep the Lights On' ! So to be fair I drove to Ankeny Dewey Dodge to get exact quotes (apples2apples) before posting this review. Conclusion: had we went to Dewey/Dodge (or prob. anywhere else), our out of pocket would have been UNDER $180 (with our extd. warranty coverage) but we paid smith's automotive $563.82 out of pocket AND our warranty peeps ALSO paid smith's automotive an additional $511. Any1 else see it? Since this Oct 2023 experience at smith's we have heard similar stories from a lot of people in the Pleasant Hill area. We have been doing business there as far back as 2012, something changed....or....maybe not! BUT WE ARE DONE!

Hearing that another establishment was able to quote a similar repair job for significantly less was deeply concerning to us, and we will be doing research on current standard pricing for starter replacements to better align with reasonable customer expectations. While overhead costs are a reality of running an established business, that isn't an excuse when someone is clearly finding far better value for comparable services elsewhere in the area. Competitive and fair prices are something we must continue to improve upon. We value all our long-time patrons and never intentionally want someone to feel taken advantage of. Please let us know if there is any way we can rebuild your confidence in the quality, reliability, and affordability you experienced from us for so many years prior to this disappointing visit. We will be evaluating what changed internally so we can make needed improvements.
